ARTIST STATEMENT A fascination with the materials has been a driving force in all of my work. I construct paintings using layers of color, which are applied based on a series of formal and intuitive choices. I often work and rework a piece until each shape falls into place. Similarly, in my three-dimensional work, I recycle and transform objects that I have an affinity for. The innate qualities of the materials help determine the final result. Nature and personal memories are recurrent themes. I try to recapture the feeling of a lived experience… often an outside experience, such as hiking in a beautiful landscape, or playing outside as a child with rocks, sticks, and seeds. Fragments of places I have been to make their way into the canvases, especially ancient places that have an old-warn out quality to them. The visual richness of these places parallels my fascination with layering, and offers constant inspiration. |
